Here and There - Field Stories of Hope

When the COVID-19 pandemic began, three of our missionary families from a partner church in Oklahoma had to leave their homes in Asia and return to the US. They were heartbroken to have to leave their communities abroad, but in the midst of all the changes and uncertainty, God has continued working through them in amazing ways.

Each family has remained in contact with their national partners and continue praying for them daily. Through the use of technology, they’ve been able to continue supporting the work God is doing in Asia, while simultaneously getting involved in the work God is doing in the US as well.

In Asia, one of their national partners has started more churches during the pandemic than he had in the previous two years combined! People are searching for hope and God is opening doors to provide them with the one true source of hope.

Back in the states, our missionary families have started several Bible studies online, and now they’re helping start a new house church in Oklahoma as well!

These families do not know when they'll get to return to Asia, but they do know no matter where they are, God can use them, and He wants to use them. So, they continue seeking opportunities to spread His love, and every day, they thank Him for the opportunity to be a part of His amazing Kingdom work.

A Migrant Worker's 700 Mile Evangelism Journey - Field Stories of Hope

For those willing to keep their hands to the plow, COVID-19 and the ensuing lockdowns are opening doors of opportunity to spread the gospel to new people and places.

Consider Rohit*, a migrant worker laboring in one of the most populous cities in South Asia. One of over 40 million such migrant workers in his home country, Rohit had already beaten the odds. Most migrants are subsistence workers, meaning what they earn today, they eat tonight. As such, their work days can run to 18 or even 20 hours. This makes them a challenging demographic to evangelize as they have so little time to engage in extended conversation. And yet, Rohit had somehow heard about and trusted in the saving power of Jesus Christ and actually taken a leadership role in a local house church.

And then, with only a four-hour notice, came the lockdown. All across the country migrant workers were faced with the awful reality that there was no work and no public transportation. For many, the decision was, “Do I starve here in the city or do I attempt to get home and starve with my loved ones?” For Rohit, the answer was simple.

He started walking the 700 miles to his home village. He hitched rides when he could and walked when he couldn’t—sharing the gospel along the way. Upon finally reaching his home, he began to share the gospel with family and friends.

As people came to faith, he equipped them and together they reached out to acquaintances in surrounding villages. So far, Rohit has planted 10 new house churches since the lockdown began. And still, his passion to see the good news available to all people everywhere burns strong.

Bread of Life Ministry

Bread of Life Ministry - Field Stories of Hope

The COVID-19 pandemic exacerbated what were already difficult times in Venezuela. Millions had fled the country in recent years, searching for hope and a better life elsewhere. Then, when the pandemic hit, the whole country went on lockdown.

An old friend and partner of e3, Carlos*, happened to be traveling through Venezuela at the time. And with no one allowed in or out of the country for the foreseeable future, he knew he’d be there for a while. So, Carlos began brainstorming ways he could spread the gospel through this unique situation. He prayed to God, asking for wisdom and guidance, and soon he had an idea.

Carlos began baking loaves of bread and delivering them door to door. He then mobilized 100 other leaders in the region to do the same. It was a simple act of kindness, but one that was unexpected, and a pleasant surprise for many. This opened up opportunities to share the Good News, pray for people and disciple other believers. He called it, “Bread of Life Ministry”.

Over the course of the next few weeks, Carlos and his team watched God use this simple act of kindness to transform the lives of many. Today, over 800 homes have heard the gospel in 29 different locations across Venezuela due to the efforts of Bread of Life Ministry! Many new home groups have started as well. God is using Carlos to grow His Kingdom.

Please pray for Carlos, for his health, safety and continued courage to take the gospel to the unreached in Venezuela. And pray for all the new believers who have come to know Christ through the Bread of Life Ministry.

Transformation of an Idol Worshiper

Transformation of an Idol Worshiper - Field Stories of Hope

Arvind* was a priest who led others in the worship of idols for many years. But at the beginning of 2020, he heard the gospel, repented, and was baptized. He immediately began to share his newfound faith, leading others to Jesus and baptizing them as well. The team praised God for this amazing transformation and prayed that Arvind would be able to stand firm in his faith, progress in spiritual maturity, and lead many others to the King! And God has been faithful in answering these prayers! Arvind has been standing strong, serving those in need, and sharing the gospel boldly. In spite of heavy trials, God is continuing to strengthen his faith.

Arvind grew up in the northern part of his home country but had moved south as an adult. After coming to know Christ, he felt compelled to return home to share the gospel with his family and friends. In obedience, he purchased a train ticket and started the long journey north. While on the train, he shared the Good News with many people, several of whom professed faith in Christ! Once he arrived home, he reconnected with the team who had introduced him to Christ through a virtual discipleship group via Zoom. As the team prayed over him and discussed his plans, Arvind told them, “I used to lead people to worship idols, but now I am returning to my people as a messenger of Jesus. God has a purpose for this time. Please pray that many of my people receive the hope of Jesus while I am here.”

And over the last several weeks, God has answered that prayer. Arvind has shared the gospel with many people from his village. Some have opposed him strongly, others have said they want to learn more about Jesus, and some have responded in repentance and faith! Due to the continuing lockdowns, he is following up with these new believers via Zoom and hopes to launch the first church in his area soon!

Please continue to pray for Arvind. God is doing mighty things both in him and through him. Pray that many will come into a relationship with the King among Arvind’s people in the coming days. Pray that they will be taught to know and obey Jesus in all things, and that a healthy church will be established there. Pray that other leaders from among his people will be equipped, and that these disciples, churches, and leaders will multiply throughout the area.

Faith in the Face of Persecution - Field Stories of Hope

Dahlia* is a Christian like you and me, but where she lives, in South Asia, Christianity is not okay. For her, participating in worship and Bible studies is dangerous, persecution is normal, and putting her faith in Christ means putting her earthly life at risk.

Recently, Dahlia was caught studying her Bible by others in her village, and without hesitation, they began beating her. She grasped her Bible tightly, hoping to keep it away from them, but just before she lost consciousness, the villagers wrenched it from her hands and destroyed it.

This was just the latest incident.

It’s difficult for us to comprehend such atrocities; religious freedom is our right in the U.S., but things are much different in other parts of the world. In most parts of South Asia, less than five percent of the population is Christian. Millions have never even heard the name of Jesus. They spend their lives striving to please many gods, never knowing the one true God that gives us hope and life.

Some might say the "Dahlias" of the world live an unimaginable life, but if you ask her, she would say she’s blessed beyond measure—all because someone went to her village and shared with her the Good News of the one true God who loves her.

We are happy to report that Dahlia survived the attack. She’s received another Bible and continues to study it, learning more and more about Christ every day so she can return to her village and share her incredible faith with others.

“How, then, can they call on the one they have not believed in? And how can they believe in the one of whom they have not heard?” — Romans 10:14a

Seventeen Days

Seventeen Days - Field Stories of Hope

“Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.” — Matthew 25:40, NIV

When the COVID-19 virus hit South Asia, like other areas across the world, businesses closed, schools shut down and public buildings locked their doors. This caused fear, anxiety, and complications throughout the region, but it also caused many to experience hope and love like they never had before. This is the story of how that happened.

-----------------------------------
Immediately after the COVID-19 crisis was declared a pandemic, e3 Partners’ global staff got on their knees asking the Lord to show them innovative ways to minister the gospel in these uncertain times. Travel had come to an abrupt stop and new methods were needed to continue the work. And as it turned out, almost as soon as the prayers were said, God opened the eyes of our South Asia team to the new opportunity they’d been looking for.

When Government officials in South Asia advised citizens to take shelter in their homes, they also cited specific areas people should avoid. Many of those areas are home to some of the most impoverished people in the region, which meant the little access to food those people had was now gone. They were starving, and they were helpless.

So, along with volunteers from local churches, e3’s national partners gathered their resources, bought rice and other basic food items, rolled up their sleeves and set to work.

Over the next 17 days, the team distributed more than 4,000 hot meals and 300 grocery kits—enough to feed an impoverished family for 2-3 weeks. This opened the doors for the gospel to be shared, and more than 1,500 lost souls received a clear presentation of it, hearing for the first time that there’s a living God who loves them. Of those 1,500 people, over 600 of them made the decision to put their faith in Christ!

There has never been a time when God was not at work. No calamity, disease or disaster can stop Him. He is at work in the midst of this pandemic, and He is doing remarkable things.

“Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves receive from God. For just as we share abundantly in the sufferings of Christ, so also our comfort abounds through Christ.” — 2 Corinthians 1:3-5

When asked how we can pray for the team ministering in this difficult area they were quick to respond:

1. Pray for those who put their own health at risk to be the hands and feet of Jesus among the those in need.

2. Pray that these new believers will become grounded and mature in their Christian faith.

3. Pray that more churches will be planted in these communities where new believers will become beacons of light to the lost around them.

With fresh innovation and the help of technology, e3’s global workers continue to train indigenous church leaders throughout the world to evangelize, disciple others and establish new churches.
